I hope that you
all had a lovely St. Valentine's Day. There is no mention of Valentines
in Austen's novels, but we do know that they existed. 'The
Young Man’s Valentine Writer’ was published in
Britain in 1797. Talking of Valentines . . . . I went to see Matthew
MacFadyen in 'Private Lives' this week. Just thought I'd slip that in!!
We have a new intern at the Jane Austen Centre this month, the lovely
Annie. She gave me some invaluable help with this newsletter, so we do
both hope that you enjoy it. . . . .

As
it is St Valentine’s Day this month I have searched for
something
romantic to appeal to all kinds of Austenites. As Miss Austen wrote;
"After all our debatings and difficulties, we find there is nothing
that will suit us altogether so well, nothing so unexceptionable, as
Lovers' Vows.” But watch out, Henry Crawford just might turn
up
on your doorstep if you choose to re-enact this infamous play . . . .

Mad,
Bad, and Dangerous to Know was a phrase used by Lady Caroline Lamb to
describe George Gordon Byron. Reading this biography will not endanger
you, but your February will certainly be a little spicier once you are
full of facts on this notorious nineteenth century poet and Casanova.

A
new, independent production of ‘Pride and
Prejudice’ will
go into production in Colorado in June 2010. Caleb Grusing is set to
follow in the footsteps of Messers Olivier, MacFadyen and . . . . what
was that other chap’s name????

Scripts,
filming schedules and signed Polaroid pictures of the cast of the 1995
‘Persuasion’ went under the hammer earlier this
month.
Guess who the winning bidder was?! Why, ‘twas The Jane Austen
Centre of course! This new acquisition will be on display in the
exhibition later this year.

Elizabeth
Bennet may well have held some apprehension of that particular letter
containing “any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of
those offers” from Mr. Darcy. However, if he had thought to
send
one of these delightful e-cards, Lizzy might have been more sensible to
his proposal.
