I hope that you all had a lovely St. Valentine's Day. There is no mention of Valentines in Austen's novels, but we do know that they existed.  'The Young Man’s Valentine Writer’ was published in Britain in 1797. Talking of Valentines . . . . I went to see Matthew MacFadyen in 'Private Lives' this week. Just thought I'd slip that in!! We have a new intern at the Jane Austen Centre this month, the lovely Annie. She gave me some invaluable help with this newsletter, so we do both hope that you enjoy it. . . . .

“Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter”
Austen E-Card

Elizabeth Bennet may well have held some apprehension of that particular letter containing “any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers” from Mr. Darcy. However, if he had thought to send one of these delightful e-cards, Lizzy might have been more sensible to his proposal.
