Has anyone else seen this film? Pride and Prejudice: A Latter Day Comedy
I found it to be wonderful and one of my favorite adaptations ever. Wikipedia describes it by saying, “Pride & Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy is a 2003 independent film adaptation/updating of Jane Austen's novel, set in modern-day Provo, Utah, at Brigham Young University. The characters are Latter-day Saints. The film received largely positive reviews outside Mormon enclaves such as Utah; some of the humor and plot devices derive from and require an understanding of Mormon social and religious mores.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_%...ter-Day_Comedy I found this to be a wonderful modern adaptation of the novel and so funny as well. It might be hard to get a copy if the DVD in the UK but it is on Amazon in the US. I would highly recommend it for those people who like modern reworking like Clueless. Here is a youtube link that has the full movie I think and then the trailer as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SS02...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbV3hYxRSoY ENJOY! There are also fun Austen references to spot throughout the film like... * Lizzy's university class is studying Jane Austen * There is a portrait of Jane Austen in Darcy's ski cabin * Lydia's pug's name is "Austen." A pet pug is also found in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. * The restaurant that Lizzy meets Darcy in is called "Rosings." * Lydia and Jack plan to get married in Las Vegas chapel that has a Scottish theme A nod to Gretna Green. * The girls' residence is on a street called Longbourn. In the book the Bennet estate is Longbourn. * In the "more religious" version Collins refers to his mission president, "President deBourgh," the way Collins refers to Lady de Bourgh in the book. * Lydia and Kitty's last name in the film is Meryton. What does everyone think of it if anyone as seen it? |

I actually used Pride and Prejudice: the Latter Day Comedy extensively in my senior thesis because I thought it was such a good modern adaptation of P&P. It is fun and kinda of edgy at the same time (Not your everyday movie for sure but still work a look at).
I really looked at their portrayal of Mr. Collins, which is amazing. He is a perfect modern Collins because he is terrible and yet a little pathetic without being sympathetic. He says and does everything that a man trying to propose should not do. He even says to Elizabeth "we've been commanded to multiply and replenish the Earth!". What a terrible thing to say to a woman, but man is he funny when he says it because he is so serious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFosR...eature=related The Mr. Collins section is in the end (starts at 6:49) but it totally worth it to watch. It is a low budget movie, but such a fun adaptation that I cant get enough of it! |
